Free Wi-Fi by XMM Network · last updated 2026-10-29
To let your device online, the Wi-Fi router tells our server your device's network (MAC) address and a one-time sign-in code. The moment it arrives, we turn the MAC address into a scrambled code using a secret key that only exists in our server's memory. The key is destroyed at the end of each calendar month and a new one is made, so the code changes every month. The MAC address itself is never written down.
We use the scrambled code only to estimate how many different devices saw the sign-in page or an ad during the month (so one phone that visits twice is counted once). It cannot be turned back into your MAC address, cannot tell us who you are, and cannot connect this month's visits to next month's. Many phones also use a private Wi-Fi address, so these numbers are estimates.
Detailed records (including the scrambled code) are deleted after 30 days. After that only totals remain, such as “120 views of this ad at this venue in October”.
XMM Network, and in total form only: the venue owner (their venue's totals) and advertisers (their own ads' totals). Reports never contain information about any single person or device.
If you tap an ad's “Directions” or “Visit website” button, you connect and then go to that business's site or map, which has its own privacy policy.
